Dutch Shepherds - General Description

Dutch Shepherds come in three varieties: shorthaired, longhaired and rough haired. Although the coat types vary, the permissible colors are the same in all these three types. They are brindle, including gray, silver, yellow, red or gold brindle and blue. The longhaired Dutch Shepherd is a rare variety. The shorthaired variety is rather widespread in Holland. The rough haired (or wire haired) type is less common than the shorthaired.

The Dutch Shepherd's body is rather muscular and symmetrical. The chest is deep. The dog's muzzle is long. The teeth are regular and strong. The slanting eyes are of a dark color. The small ears are erect. The small feet do not have dewclaws. The tail is curved.

Dutch Shepherds are enthusiastic working dogs. They excel in agility and obedience competitions, herding, field training, catch, guard work and companionship. Breed lovers can talk about their dogs for hours. It is no wonder that many people adore this breed for Dutch Shepherds are loyal, affectionate, and obedient. These dogs get along well with other animals. If children respect the dog, they can be great friends with them. Dutch Shepherds are excellent guard and watchdogs. They are protective of their family when strangers are around. Dutch Shepherds recognize family friends.

Weight: Dogs weigh around 65-67 pounds.
Life Span: Dutch Shepherds can live up to 12-14 years.
